Purpose: Diagnose and repair Camera 5 – Contamination Camera Down
Details: Camera 5, or the Contamination Camera, is located in the upper rear corner on the left side of the hopper opening. The camera is mounted to a 3rd Eye bracket and is accompanied by a LED light bar and, in some cases, a factory hopper camera (figure 1.1) and (figure 1.2).

Figure 1.2
Issue: Camera 5 – Contamination Camera Down or “FAIL”. Camera 5 will show “Red” in the 3rd Eye Portal (figure 1.7)
Diagnose:
Step 1: Visually inspect the Contamination Camera, bracket, and light bar. If the Contamination Camera is missing or damaged and the bracket is in place and not damaged, proceed to Step 2. If there is no damage to the bracket, Contamination Camera is intact, and the LED light bar is intact, proceed to Step 3. If the entire bracket setup is missing or severely damaged, proceed to Step 4.
Step 2: Before installing a new camera to replace the damaged or missing camera, perform a visual inspection of the camera cable and connection points.
If the cable is severed or damage exists at the connection point, replace the damaged camera cable with a new camera cable – Part # AWT025TT (figure 1.4). This can be performed by tracing the camera cable path from the mounting bracket into the cab where camera cable connects to the Gateway AV cable.
If the camera cable is visually intact, replace the missing or damaged camera with a new camera – Part # AWT2020T (figure 1.5)
Figure 1.4 figure 1.5
Once the camera is bolted to the bracket, the camera must be adjusted to the correct viewing angle. The correct viewing angle can be achieved by utilizing a handheld remote viewing monitor and connection adapter (available from your supervisor or manager). The acceptable viewing angle is shown below (figure 1.6).
Figure 1.6
Once the correct viewing angle is achieved, tighten all bolts on camera brackets and connect the camera to the existing camera cable.
Turn the truck ignition to “On” or “Accessory” and allow the 3rd Eye Gateway to boot up (usually within 1-2 minutes). Locate the truck in the 3rd Eye Portal and verify that Camera 5 is now showing “Green” status (figure 1.7). This designates that the camera is connected to the Gateway and functioning properly and the repair is complete and there is no need to continue to the next steps.
Figure 1.7
If Camera 5 is still showing a “Red” status, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Gain access to the Gateway unit (under passenger seat or behind driver seat). Disconnect the camera cable from the Camera 5 A/V Port and temporarily connect into a different port. Turn the truck to “On” or “Accessory” and allow the 3rd Eye Gateway to boot up (usually within 1-2 minutes). Locate the truck in the 3rd Eye Portal and check the status “Red” or “Green” on the designated port that the cable is temporarily connected (refer to figure 1.7).
Status is “Green”
Replace the Gateway A/V Cable – Part # 3EC-AV426-E (figure 1.8). Once the A/V cable has been replaced, check the status of the camera in the 3rd Eye Portal (refer to figure 1.7). If the status is “Green” the repair is complete and there is no need to continue to next steps. If the status is “Red” submit a service ticket for additional 3rd Eye support.
Figure 1.8
Status is “Red”
If the camera cable from the hopper bracket was not replaced in Step 2, disconnect the camera cable from the temporary A/V port and replace the camera cable with a new camera cable as shown in Step 2. Once the new camera cable has been replaced and re-connected to A/V Port 5, check the status of the camera in the 3rd Eye Portal (refer to figure 1.7). If the status is now “Green” the repair is complete and there is no need to continue to the next steps. If the status is still “Red” follow the steps as shown above under Status is “Green”.
Step 4:
If the bracket is damaged, remove the existing bracket. Once removed, or if the bracket is missing, Install a new bracket utilizing the correct bracket part number based on the body type as shown below:
- McNeilus (All) – 3EC-HOPPERKIT-MCM
- Heil (2018 and older); Wittke; Labrie; any other not listed – 3EC-HOPPERKIT-HEILA
- Heil (2019 and newer) – 3EC-HOPPERKIT-HEILB
- Amrep – 3EC-HOPPERKIT-AMREP
Once the new bracket has been installed, proceed back to Step 2.
